Gummy Cosplay

Ask (We'd love to explain our bs-ery!)   Past Cosplays

This is a magical fun blog co-run by two Avatar/Korra fans, Gummy and Ducky, who are also two bffs in real life. Since we go to different colleges in different states, we only see each other on holidays, and that’s when we have MAGICAL FUN COSPLAY ADVENTURES :D

We’re not pros at making cosplays but we have a lot of determination and a sewing machine and the internet, so why not try?

Let me make this clear

rai-redemption:

This is cosplay

this is fun

this is expressing yourself and the chracter

or what gender you are

The AFO tag is filled with art. Hmmm.

But anyways this is the obligatory “hello!” post. My friend and I were Toph and Zuko, respectively, last year. And the year before we were part of one of the Eeveelutions groups haha. And this year we’re planning on going as Dream Drop Sora and Riku so don’t be a stranger and say hi! Although AFO has had its ups and downs, we always have a great time and we love how nice all of the attendees are. :)

A hundred more days to bs cosplays, hang in there! :’)

Sure, the plastic look-alikes of Sora’s Kingdom Key look quite similar to the in-game weapon which is iconic to the KINGDOM HEARTS franchise. But never before has an authentic keyblade been forged with steel, until Tony Swatton “the master swordsmith and renowned propmaster” from the Man At Arms show decided to make one by himself, after tons of requests from fans. Take a look at the video of the forging below.

Forged using “high-speed belt grinders, scorching furnaces, and pounding power hammers”, the Kingdom Key has never before looked so authentic. Although it lacks the power to vanquish heartless and lock the world’s keyhole, it’s still a very decent weapon, as demonstrated by Swatton himself taking the blade out to “bust up some stuff”.

I may have laughed really hard when they started enthusiastically smashing stuff with it because yeah, who wouldn’t want to do that honestly

Tutorial: plastic keychains

kaiami:

I know a ton of you have been waiting for this one. Teaching you to make your own plastic keychains!

To start off, I think the biggest question everyone has is what I use to make them. I work with shrink film. You might be familiar with Shinky Dink brand shrink film as a kid. I use Grafix brand white inkjet shrink film. The inkjet kind is relatively pricey compared to the regular kind. If you’re using regular, I don’t recommend you stick it in your printer. Sharpie markers would be good for that.

image

Alright, now open up the file with the images that you’re working with. Make sure your images are a lot bigger than you want your finished product to be since they shrink significantly.

image

You’ll also want to lighten the opacity to about half. I go somewhere between 50-60%.

image

Now print your image out! I’ve found that it works best for me when I have it at the plain paper setting, and standard print quality.

image

Holepunch with a 1/4” holepuncher BEFORE you shrink them. It’s so much more work to have to punch holes when your plastic is thick!

image

Cut out your design, leaving the amount of border you want.

image

image

Set them on a tray for convenience. An aluminum foil sheet works too, but I recommend cookie trays because they are easier and quicker to get out of the oven.

image

Preset heat. Your shrink film package will tell you what temperature to set it at, but I find that it isn’t always accurate for me. I generally set temperature to 350 degrees or so.

image

Put them in the oven. Remember to keep track of time! I leave them in for about a minute and a half.

image

After time is up they should be super small! Magic!

image

If your charms are not flat, put something heavy on it right out of the oven when they are still hot and malleable.

image

image

If you’d like to, you can seal them now. In my last two batches, I used clear topcoat nail polish. The problem with that is that I need between 3-5 coats of it, and it takes a while to dry. I’ve been experimenting with modpodge.

image

For lariats, you can use jump rings or lobster clasps.

image

Here is one that I made that wasn’t sealed. The finished texture after shrinking is a little bit rough. There’s nothing wrong with leaving them unsealed, but because they are inkjet printed, the colors wash right of without protection.

image

This is one that was sealed with modpodge. The colors become a little more vibrant and smooth and water resistant. Things often get stuck on when applying or drying so be careful.

image

These ones down here were sealed with clear nail polish. They come out shiny if you put enough coats, but the grainy texture will still be there.

image

Well, there ya go! Have fun making your own keychains!

RL update from Ducky (aka always absent from this blog)

gummyducky:

The postcard says: you x me = OTP ;)
Which is funny true ‘cause we tend to cosplay ships: Toph/Zuko brotp, Sora/Riku it should be considered cannon in Dream Drop, and Robin/Artemis traught > spitfire.

Also my wig arrived a week ago, it’s not fusion vanilla purple but ice purple. :b And my loose painter jeans and black tee (as a base) arrived for Riku. And my double-prong belt but I gotta return it ‘cause Riku’s jeans sits at his hips and a small will not work for my hips.

Also, I just recruited our friend mcchekovs to join us as Rocket for our Young Justice cosplay. (And there’s also Kenny cosplaying Aqualad.)

RL Update: MOMOCON

gummyfoxes:

Sorry I haven’t been active lately. Most of my time has been spent on COSPLAY ANGST because I wanted to cosplay Kuroko with my friend rice-consumer who was going to be my Akashi. So we kinda slaved for the last 3 weeks in the midst of midterms to finish everything @__@

It was a lot of fun though. I was really surprised anyone recognized us! If anyone in the momocon tag has any pics of Teikou!Kuroko and Akashi from sunday, please tag me or message me since I didn’t get too many shots of my own costume.

Picspam + more under the cut

ATTENTION COSPLAYERSSee this shit? This shit is about to change your life. This packet of stuff is called Instamorph Moldable Plastic. You literally buy a packet of this shit, and you can make any-fucking-thing.
You open it up, and you get little plastic pellets that look like this.
Doesn’t look like much, right?
WRONG.
When put in hot water (140°F, 60°C.), these pellets melt into a kind of putty-like stuff, that you can mold into whatever shape you want. They make the coolest cosplay accessories EVER because they’re plastic - they’re moderately lightweight, they’ll survive being dropped and banged around, and they’re waterproof. I made Nepeta horns and Meenah bracelets for my homestuck cosplays, but it can do a ton of other stuff too.

Also, the whole project takes maybe a half hour - 10 minutes to boil the water, 2 for the pellets to melt in the bowl (it leaves no residue, so you can use a regular mixing bowl and a spoon to pull it out of the water), a few minutes to sculpt and then a few minutes for it to dry into a completely solid, plastic whatever-you’re-making.
AND THE BEST PART OF THIS IS THAT THIS SHIT IS SO CHEAP
YOU’D EXPECT IT TO BE REALLY EXPENSIVE BUT IT’S NOT
I got a container on Amazon.com for $10, but here’s the actual site so you can check it out some more. http://www.instamorph.com/
SERIOUSLY THOUGH DON’T GO TO ALL THE TROUBLE OF FINDING CREATIVE AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MIX MATERIALS, THIS IS REALLY GREAT.

Perfect for Con season.

Reblogging for hopefully- future-reference. If ever do get into cosplay like a want to (it’s turned into an if because doing so requires a job, which I still lack) I might use this.

Gummy here! We haven’t put up progress shots of anything so here is a little something - the base mold thing for my Robin (Young Justice) mask! It was really easy to make. If anyone is interested in how:
Get a plastic bag and stretch it over your face. Quickly mark locations for breathing/eye holes and then take it off your face to cut it out
Put the newly cut bag back on, and now you won’t suffocate as you put on 2-3 layers of duct tape over the bag so that it will retain its shape
To add additional hardness, I also added a few layers of paper mache over the tape
Trim as needed
Next I am going to go put liquid latex mixed with black paint over this base and hopefully cut out a nice form-fitting domino mask for myself. I’ll report back to you guys on how that goes later, since Ducky has the black paint right now and I’m dying from finals.
This is generally pretty convenient for making all sorts of masks, and the supplies are pretty cheap :)

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of decoden and polymer clay questions about what to use to as a gloss/glaze. Almost every time the first response is “Clear nail polish, duh!”.
This needs to stop if people want to be creating quality items. Sometimes I’m afraid to buy handmade things for fear that they have been sealed with clear nail polish and they will deteriorate over time. I want to buy things that will last!

Pleeeaaassseee stoppppp.
I just saw someone in the tutorials tag claim nail polish is stronger than other stuff. It’s lies, all lies!
